Inaugural Costa Debate Comes to a Close in Year of Reading 2016

Dubai, 11 March, 2016: The votes are in and the winner has been chosen. After a successful campaign, Team Coffee has been elected the winner of the hotly-contested Costa Debate. The announcement was made today at a glamorous ceremony held during the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature.

The first edition of the Costa Debate, held under the aegis of Costa Coffee saw a large number of entries in both English and Arabic from around the UAE. The winner received a 4-day all-expenses paid trip to London including a visit to the Costa Roastery.

To enter the competition, participants were required to send in a 300-word essay defending their choice of tea or coffee. The Debate is one of two new competitions started by the Festival to promote a reading habit in the UAE and follows the nationwide initiatives launched for the Year of Reading, declared by UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The prizes were presented by 2014 Costa Award-winner Helen Macdonald. Also attending the ceremony were Isobel Abulhoul, CEO and Trustee of the Emirates Literature Foundation and Festival Director of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature and Costa Coffee Chief Operating Officer, Kevin Zajax, who was delighted by the excitement around the competition. ‘The entire competition process has been a thrill for all involved,’ he said. ‘I am glad to see that Coffee has won, but overall it was an engaging debate and it is fantastic to see such passion not only around tea and coffee but the passion for literature amongst all of those who entered and all of those involved in the Festival. We are really looking forward to being back again next year with a different debate.’
