Dubai, 6 December, 2015: The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature and Dubai International Film Festival are pairing up for a unique insight into the transition from page to screen. Making a film from a book is a daunting task with huge responsibilities for both the author, who wants to remain true to his work, and the director who needs to make his own impression.
Under the spotlight for this special collaboration, Robert Kanigel author of ‘The Man Who Knew Infinity’ and Matthew Brown, who wrote the screenplay, directed and produced the film of the same name. The story, a biography of Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan was written by Kanigal in 1991 and won him acclaim as a Los Angeles Times Book Prize Finalist, National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist, New York Public Library, Book to Remember and a Library Journal, Best Sci-Tech Book and many other accolades.
The film, starring Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons will be presented as a Red Carpet Gala event earlier in the evening which will see Dev Patel and Matthew Brown walk the red carpet before introducing the film to DIFF audiences in the Madinat Arena.
Isobel Abulhoul, CEO and trustee of the Emirates Literature Foundation and Festival Director of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature believes the panel discussion is a perfect setting for a meeting of different media minds. “The relationship between literature and films has often been controversial but so often one can complement the other. There is not necessarily a right way or a wrong way to treat a subject and the written word and the acted scene can even create a more complete picture,” she said. “It is wonderful to have two of Dubai’s most important cultural events come together to host this fascinating debate. For the Literature Festival and the Film Festival this is very much common ground and a great opportunity for us to provide such an interesting event for fans of story-telling in all its forms.”
Shivani Pandya, DIFF Managing Director, said: “We are delighted to partner with the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature to celebrate and explore the book-to-screen artistic process. The life of the genius mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan is truly extraordinary and Robert Kanigel’s biography is exceptional, I urge all of our Festival goers to come to the session to learn how director Matt Brown transported this captivating story to the big screen.”
The Man Who Knew Infinity screening commences at 18:00 in the Madinat Arena on the 12 December and will be followed by the event at the Madinat Conference Centre, beginning at 20:15 and will be moderated by Paul Blezard, Literary Director of Firebird Poetry Prizes.
