Hi, I’m Lina LitFest, the new mascot for the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature. If you’ve ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at your favourite literature festival, look no further!
Lina: What exactly does the Head of Sponsorship and Authors Cultural programme do?
I look after sponsorships for the Festival. That involves meeting potential and existing sponsors, funding, branding for the sponsors etc. During the Festival itself I make sure all the sponsors are represented as agreed. I also organise the social and cultural program for the authors who attend the Festival! The program makes sure that they see a little bit of the local culture of Dubai.
Lina: What’s a typical day for you?
A typical day consists of meetings, pitches to sponsors and follow ups. My biggest friend is my laptop and the internet and of course my handy notebook and pen!
Lina: Who are you most looking forward to seeing at #EAFOL16?
Anthony Horowitz. I’ve always identified him as a children’s author courtesy the many Alex Rider books I have bought for my son. However in the recent past he has been commissioned to write the new Sherlock and Bond books. I have read House of Silk by him and I thought it was a pastiche that managed to stay quite true to the essence of Sherlock Holmes! And also Diana Darke – I am keen to hear her take on the situation in Syria. We all hear a lot from the outside but she has been on the inside and her home has been a place of shelter for many displaced refugees, so that should be an interesting session. And not to forget Meera Syal – I have thoroughly enjoyed her performances as the meddling opinionated grandmother in Kumars at no 42 and would love to see her in person.
Lina: Tell me about your favourite book.
Difficult to choose one, there are so many that are in the bookshelf by my bedside that I will often pick up to read an dre-read. The pages with my favourite bits are all dog-eared! The Three Musketeers, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Infidel, Little Women, Dr Zivago, The Hitchhiker Guide to the Galaxy, Harry Potter, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Pride & Predujice, Gone with the Wind, Atlas Shrugged.
Lina: If you could be any character in a book, who would you be?
Jo, from Little Women.
