The-Mongol-EmpireJohn Man is a historian and travel writer specialising in China and Mongolia. He is the author ofGenghis Khan, The Great Walland most recently The Mongol Empire. The Guardian said of Man’s book on Genghis Khan, “From the very first page Man does for the reader that most difficult of tasks: he conjures up an ancient people in an alien landscape in such a way as to make them live.”

His most recent books include Samurai: The Last Warrior, which follows the life of Saigo Takamori, known to many as ‘the last samurai’, and Ninja: 1,000 Years of the Shadow Warriors, ‘the first major pop history of the Japanese stealth assassins’. His latest book, Saladin, was published in April 2015.

He lectures frequently. In TV, he has contributed to BBC and History Channel documentaries on Genghis Khan and Attila. He advised director Sergei Bodrov on the Oscar-nominated feature film Mongol.

Man has also authored a trilogy of books on the history of written communication, Alpha Beta, on the alphabet, and The Gutenberg Revolution, on printing. The third part of the series is on hold due to difficulties in accessing information within Iraq.

Man lives in north London, inspired by his strong and beautiful family.
